Congressman Johnson Opposes War Supplemental

Congressman Hank Johnson, a member of the U.S. Armed Services Committee, today announced that he voted against the supplemental bill approved by Congress that concedes most terms demanded by the President.

"The passage of this legislation is a big loss for the American people and I could not support it," said Congressman Johnson, who favors a phased troop withdrawal with specific deadlines to hold the Administration accountable. "I know that the people of the 4th District of Georgia sent me to Congress to hold the president accountable and bring our troops home and that is why I could no longer support a spending bill which did not move towards either of those goals."

The President must now take full ownership of his war and all of the casualties that result. This time, he can't blame Congress for holding out," said the Congressman. After four years of escalating combat, 3,500 Americans are dead, 25,000 are wounded and maimed, and nearly 100,000 Iraqis are dead. Rep. Johnson also voted to override the President's recent veto.

Yet, the President asserts that progress is being made. He was wrong five years ago when he claimed Saddam had weapons of mass destruction and links to al Qaeda; he was wrong when he landed on an aircraft carrier and declared victory; and he is wrong on this war supplemental."
