Van Hollen: Bush Budget Represents Misplaced Priorities
Congressman Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) released the following statement today on President Bush's budget request:
"Last November, Americans sent a clear message and voted for a new direction for the country. Apparently, the President hasn't gotten the message. With today's budget proposal, the President has offered more of the same.
"While I applaud the President for joining Congress to increase the maximum Pell Grant, I fear that his proposal is merely one bright spot in a budget full of misplaced priorities. It is unconscionable that the President has chosen to make his $1.6 trillion tax cuts permanent while failing to fully fund No Child Left Behind and cutting funding for the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. It is time to make the education of our nation's students, not the pocketbooks of our wealthiest citizens, our top priority.
"President Bush is essentially following his same misguided policies: costly tax cuts that primarily benefit the wealthiest, cuts in domestic priorities, and more fiscal irresponsibility."
