Boozman Votes for Fiscal Responsibility
U.S. Representative John Boozman (R-AR) today joined 48 Republicans in voting to adopt Title IV, the "PAYGO" provision, of H.Res. 6, the House Rules Package for the 110th Congress.
The PAYGO rule would require tax cuts to have corresponding cuts in government spending or tax increases elsewhere to pay for them. Likewise, any increase in entitlement programs like Medicare would have to have corresponding tax increases, or equal cuts in other government programs.
"This is a common-sense step to require the House of Representatives to pay-as-we-go when it comes to money matters," Boozman said. "The American people demanded we begin down the road to fiscal responsibility, and this rule is a good first step.
"Now, the Congress has two options as to how we arrive at solvency: cutting spending or raising taxes. I will continue to fight to reduce spending, letting the American people continue to keep there hard-earned money to do with as they see fit.
"The onus is now on Speaker Pelosi and the Democrats to make the choice to not raise taxes and continue the economic policy which has led us to increased wages, millions of more jobs and an economy that continues to grow faster than any other industrialized nation," Boozman continued.
"I look forward to working in a bipartisan manner to restrain big government, while maintaining our priorities: a strong national defense; tax relief needed to keep the economy strong; enhancing energy security; making health care more affordable; and further improving the quality of education."
