Second Amendment
I know from my study of the history of the Second Amendment that the Founders
intended it to protect the right of individual citizens to own, maintain, and shoot firearms.
I wholeheartedly agree with protection of a very fundamental right; the right to defense of
self and family. Use of firearms for hunting, shooting contests, or just collecting are all
equally legitimate as well. Only those who trust government more than the people would
want to see firearms removed from private hands. I am absolutely committed to keeping
this right intact.
What have I done to protect the Second Amendment? I proudly voted in 2005 to limit
abusive lawsuits brought against gun manufacturers by individuals, cities, and states that
do not value personal freedom. The legislation provides protection for those in the
firearms industry from lawsuits arising out of the criminal acts of people who unlawfully
use their products. The idea that a manufacturer or dealer is liable for the criminal
actions an individual chooses to make with a product is absurd. If we adopt that legal
precedent, then where does it stop? Do we hold car manufacturers and dealers liable for
deaths a driver causes when driving recklessly or under the influence? Unable to outlaw
gun ownership in the legislature, gun control advocates brought a series of frivolous
lawsuits forward, often financed with tax dollars, in the hope not of winning in court, but
rather wanting to financially exhaust these companies, many of which are quite small.
The Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act' was bipartisan, common sense
legislation preventing frivolous lawsuits from bankrupting the firearms industry and
denying Americans their constitutionally protected right to bear arms. While I am
committed to protecting the rights of law-abiding citizens, I am equally committed to
reducing the use of firearms by criminals. There are smart ways to reduce gun violence
in our country. Lawsuits are not one of them.
