Amid raucous cheers of support, the Nevada AFL-CIO at its 50th Anniversary Constitutional Convention today announced that its membership will endorse Senator Dina Titus in her run for governor. Titus addressed a packed house of union representatives this morning at the Luxor Las Vegas Conference Center, thanking the group for its continued support, and pledging to "take back our government for the people of Nevada." The AFL-CIO represents more than 160,000 working Nevadans throughout the state.
Titus cited her record of advocacy for issues important to the working men and women of Nevada, including safe working conditions, affordable health care, greater access to education, and continued support for a strong union movement.
"When organized labor prospers, we all prosper," said Titus. "More people have better jobs with better salaries, better health insurance, better retirement benefits, better homes, more money put back into the economy, and less need for social services paid for by your tax dollars."
Titus also discussed Congressman Gibbons' dismal record of voting against America's working families, including opposition to a six month extension of unemployment insurance to more than 2 million Americans in 2004 and support for a repeal of OSHA workplace standards. Gibbons also opposed Nevada's minimum wage constitutional initiative, though he had previously stated his support for increasing the minimum wage.
"The list goes on and on," she said. "Congressman Gibbons is not a man you can trust at the helm. He would push to undermine retirement benefits and cut health insurance. He would roll back prevailing wage for public works projects and always side with the interests of capital over the interests of labor."
"Change is what we need in this country - in Washington and in Carson City," she stated. "We need a new direction that rewards hard work, honors real family values, protects individual choices and says no' to special interests. As Governor, I will be the agent of that needed change. I will be a strong steward of the state's resources, both human and natural. And I will make the public interest my lodestar."
Union representatives in attendance not only pledged to support Senator Titus' campaign personally and professionally, but also financially, with several AFL-CIO member groups delivering checks totaling more than $50,000 and pledge letters for much more immediately following Titus' address.
