Boozman Votes to Secure Voting Process
Casts "Aye" to prevent voter fraud
U.S. Representative John Boozman (R-AR) voted to secure the basic right of Americans: the right to vote in fair elections, by voting for H.R. 4844, the Federal Election Integrity Act of 2006.
"Our most cherished right in this country, and the guarantor of our freedom, is the right to vote," Boozman said after casting his vote. "It is important for government at all levels to ensure the voting process is free of fraud and misconduct.
"The Federal Election Integrity Act will provide assurance to Americans our voting process is secure and honest by ensuring only those who are eligible to vote are allowed to do so," Boozman added.
The legislation will require voters to present photo identification at polling places, beginning in 2008. Starting in 2010, voters will be required to provide photo identification at polling places which also proves they are citizens of the United States.
"ID requirements are needed to preserve the integrity of elections," Boozman said. "They are too important to be operated on an honor system.'
"In Mexico, there are over 71 million voters registered, according to its Federal Election Institute," Boozman continued. "Over 90% of the voters in Mexico have a secure voter identification card. Surely, we can put together a similar program to ensure the integrity of our elections.
In 2005, former President Jimmy Carter and former Secretary of State James Baker recommended a nationwide standard for voter identification, including the use of standardized driver's licenses. H.R. 4844 requires States to set up programs to distribute free identification cards to the indigent and authorizes federal funds to reimburse States for the cost of free identification.
"Voter ID is not Republican, or Democrat, it is American," Boozman said. "It guarantees the bedrock principle of the American way of life: one person, one vote."
