THE STEM CELL RESEARCH ENHANCEMENT ACT
Today the Senate approved H.R. 810, the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act. Passed by the House in 2005, this legislation lifts President Bush's restriction preventing federal funding for research on embryonic stem cell lines derived from surplus embryos that would otherwise be discarded from in vitro fertilization clinics.
Congressman Bernie Sanders said; "For those people who are suffering from Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's, diabetes, stroke, spinal injury and many other illnesses, stem cell research holds enormous potential. I strongly agree with the scientific community that it's imperative that we lift the ban on creating new stem cell lines. If President Bush vetoes this legislation, as he has threatened, I will vote to over-ride it. The President's political ideology should not stand in the way of major medical breakthroughs for millions of people."
