McNerney: Pombo, Bush wrong on stem cell research veto
DUBLIN, CA -- California 11th Congressional District Candidate Jerry McNerney today sided with the vast majority of Americans who want to expand federal funding for stem cell research after President Bush cast his first veto to block the enabling legislation. Rep. Richard Pombo sided with Bush to disallow such funding, which top medical researchers think has the potential to cure diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.
"President Bush and Richard Pombo are on the wrong side of this issue," said McNerney. "Pombo's position on stem cell research is anti-science and anti-patient, striking a huge blow against the hopes of Americans with debilitating diseases."
"Like global warming, this is another example of Pombo defying the scientific community and working against the best interests of the American people," McNerney said. "Richard Pombo is out-of-touch with Californians and the people of our district who are counting on stem cell research to save lives."
When elected to Congress, Jerry McNerney will support the research community with the funding and the tools they need to defeat terrible diseases like Parkinson's and Alzheimer's.
"On this life-and-death issue important to most Americans, Richard Pombo and President Bush are frankly wrong," said McNerney. "The American people deserve leaders who will do the right thing."
