Conservation

I grew up hunting and fishing with my dad, cousins, and neighbors, and I know that outdoor activities are a key part of the Wisconsin way of life. To preserve the Wisconsin outdoors tradition and grow our tourism industry, we need sensible laws to protect the environment. We're lucky to live amid the natural beauty of Northeast Wisconsin, and we have an obligation to preserve it, and the quality of life it brings, for future generations.

I will work to make our air cleaner and our water purer. I'll fight to ensure that our children can safely play in our neighborhoods, our families can enjoy our outdoors, and our sportsmen can hunt and fish in our lakes and forests. I'll also work to foster a healthy economy and a healthy environment by promoting new technologies that create good jobs and reduce our impact on the natural world.

We must reject the false choice between a healthy economy and a healthy environment. We know that farming, fishing, tourism, and other industries depend on the environment. We know new technologies that protect the environment can create new, high-paying jobs. We know a cleaner environment means a stronger economy. If we want to preserve the Wisconsin outdoors tradition and expand our tourism industry, we need sensible laws about the environment and conservation.

Preserving clean air and water - We owe future generations the same chance to enjoy the beauty of the earth that we have today. This means supporting reasonable laws to preserve the environment. The Clean Air Act should include more major pollutants and provide regulatory flexibility to businesses that commit to meet or exceed existing standards. In particular, I'll fight to reduce mercury emissions which threaten the health of fishermen and others in Northeast Wisconsin.

Protecting hunting and fishing - My dad bought me a 20 gauge shotgun for Christmas when I was twelve so I could join him in hunting deer. I understand that hunting and fishing are key parts of the Northeast Wisconsin lifestyle, and I will work to make sure that we can enjoy them in the future. I'm committed to protecting the lands used by hunters and anglers and will work to open new acreage to public hunting and fishing. Voluntary, incentive-based programs that help private landowners be good stewards of their land are a good tool to conserve and restore the habitats where wildlife flourish.

We're lucky to live amid the natural beauty of Northeast Wisconsin, and we have an obligation to preserve it, and the quality of life it brings, for future generations. The health of our families, the strength of our economy, and the well-being of Wisconsin all depend upon a clean environment.
