National Security

National Security

My dad was an infantryman in the Korean War, and I know the sacrifices that veterans and others have made to preserve our freedom. Each generation of Americans faces different challenges abroad, and we need to make sure that our military remains the best in the world. At the same time, we need to pursue policies that make it less likely that we will have to send our brave men and women in uniform to war once again.

Pursuing terrorists - We need to hunt down the Al Qaeda terrorists, in Afghanistan and elsewhere, who were responsible for the horror of September 11 and may be responsible for further atrocities in the future.

Ensuring homeland security - We need to make smart investments in homeland security that will make our borders safer without sacrificing the freedoms that make us American.

Stopping nuclear proliferation - The prospect of a nuclear September 11 is truly horrifying. We need to work to secure "loose nukes" around the world and to ensure that unsavory regimes don't produce nuclear weapons.

Achieving energy independence - Every time we fill up at the gas tank, we send a small "terrorism tax" to oppressive regimes in the Middle East that produce and sometimes fund terrorists. The single best thing we could do to reduce the threat of terrorism and promote democracy in the Middle East is to make America less dependent on foreign oil. That means working to develop new technologies and promoting alternative sources of energy.
