Fiscal Responsibility

Fiscal Responsibility

Every year the federal government spends half a trillion dollars more than it takes in. That's so much money that it's hard to comprehend. It's more than $1700 a year in new debt for every man, woman, and child in America. That's money that has to come from somewhere - and it eventually is going to come from us. Borrowing at that scale will eventually drive up interest rates, damaging the economy and forcing us all to pay more for our mortgages, car loans, and student loans. What's worse, we're borrowing most of that money from abroad, some of it from undemocratic regimes like China that don't always have our best interests in mind.

The root of this problem is simply irresponsible behavior in Washington. The federal government has been spending money like it's going out of style - from 2001 to 2005, Congress piled almost $40,000 of new federal debt on the average family of four. That's a couple of new cars. Or the down payment on a really nice house. I know that the average Northeast Wisconsin family has better ways to spend money than paying interest on government debt. That's why I'll work to return fiscal responsibility to Washington. That will require taking on a lot of special interests. But it's the right thing to do, for Wisconsin and for the whole country.
