At a time when seniors are living longer, healthier lives, they seem to be under assault by the companies they've worked for and by the federal government they've paid taxes to for decades.
Retirement Security in the last year alone, Rhode Island seniors had to fear that their Social Security benefits were going to be cut by the pro-privatization crowd in Washington. They've been promised lower prescription costs, only to be handed a complicated federal program that will only help a select few who can figure it out.
We also saw more corporations dupe their retirees out of their pensions while seeing too many CEO's cash in on their multi-million dollar bonuses. My plan is to make sure that worker's pensions are treated no differently than the CEO's pension who govern them.
We can protect Social Security too. We just need the courage to tell the voters we're going to lift the limit on Social Security withholding from $90,000 to $120,000. That makes a lot more sense than cutting benefits and we can keep Social Security solvent for decades to come.
One of the most immediate things we need to do is to scrap the new Medicare prescription drug plan and immediately replace it with a plan that works for seniors. My plan will make it easier for more seniors who need coverage, to get it. And to ensure the lowest possible prescription costs, I'll make sure that Medicare can use the huge bargaining power of the federal government to negotiate for lower priced drugs, just the way the VA does.
