Baldwin Statement on Stem Cell Veto

"The President's veto today of a bill to expand stem cell research is yet another example of how the Bush administration is leading America in the wrong direction. Scientific breakthroughs by researchers at the University of Wisconsin have provided the basis for new lines of inquiry that hold the potential to yield life-saving treatments and cures for the most debilitating diseases and injuries. Yet, progress has been delayed by politically-motivated funding restrictions for embryonic stem cell research imposed by President Bush. And today, once again, he has interfered in time-honored, highly-respected and ethical scientific inquiry. With the stroke of his pen, President Bush disregards the will of the American people and hinders our ability to cure disease and ease human suffering."
