Max Burns Announces For Congress

Former Congressman to campaign for new open seat

(SYLVANIA, GA) - Former 12th District Congressman Max Burns yesterday announced to his family, friends and supporters that he will establish a new campaign committee and run for Congress in the new open 12th Congressional District. The announcement was made by Burns on the Old Screven County Courthouse square in Sylvania, in the heart of the new 12th Congressional District.

"Folks, we're making the announcement here in Sylvania, where it all began," says Burns. ?This is where we built our values, where we gained our common sense, where our roots are. As I told you back in 2002, if the 12th District is to have a future, we need a Congressman with a positive, hopeful vision. This election is about the future generations that want to live, work, and raise a family here in East Georgia. If they are to succeed, they need a Representative who will take to Washington those common sense, Georgia values that our parents instilled in us right here in the heart of this new District."

Burns said he would immediately begin the process of establishing a campaign team, and will continue reaching out and listening to voters about the kind of leadership they want in the United State Congress. A more formal and official announcement tour launching the campaign will be made at a later date.

In March, the Georgia General Assembly passed a new Congressional map to rid the state of the partisan gerrymandering that split apart counties and communities of interest. The new map restores common sense to Georgia's Congressional representation and will allow Georgia's Congressional delegation to better represent their constituents in Washington. Earlier this month, Governor Sonny Perdue signed the map into law, and it is now awaiting clearance from the U.S. Department of Justice.

Since the Georgia General Assembly passed a new Congressional map, the former Congressman has met with friends and supporters from all across the new 12th District as well as delegates at the 3rd and 12th District Republican Conventions, and the Georgia GOP State Convention in Savannah to discuss a potential campaign.

"I've spent the last few months listening to friends, leaders, and voters from all over the new 12th District," says Burns. "Lora and I are both humbled and gratified at the tremendous amount of encouragement we?ve received. We?re excited. We will run a great campaign."

Burns represented the former 12th District from January 7, 2003, through January 3, 2005. Prior to serving in the 108th Congress, Burns was a professor in the College of Business Administration at Georgia Southern University and a Senior Fulbright Scholar. He is a former Screven County Commissioner and served as its Chairman. Currently, Burns splits his time between his family farm in Sylvania and Washington, DC where he works with Thelen Reid & Priest as a Senior Policy Advisor. He focuses on issues important to Georgia -including agriculture, energy, transportation and education.
