Burns Restates His Opposition To Abortion
(SYLVANIA, GA) - Today as thousands of pro-life supporters attend rallies and marches in our nation's capital and across America, Max Burns, former Congressman and candidate for Georgia's New 12th District, reaffirmed his support for the sanctity of life and opposition to abortion.
"Life is so very precious, and I believe every child and every person has a right to life," said Burns. "I'm pro-life, have always been pro-life and my record in Congress demonstrated very clearly that I oppose abortion. I'm also proud of my vote in the 108th Congress to ban the gruesome partial-birth abortion procedure."
On January 22, 1973, the Supreme Court handed down its decision in Roe v. Wade making abortion legal in the United States. Since then, supporters of life have worked to overturn that decision. As a member of the 108 th Congress, Burns voted to make it a crime to harm a fetus during another crime and voted to ban partial-birth abortion. Both bills were later signed into law by President Bush.
"I also oppose taxpayer funding of abortions and support laws requiring parental notification and consent where minors are involved. I support adoption as a positive solution and believe we must take every opportunity to offer alternatives to abortion by providing counseling and assistance to women with unplanned pregnancies," said Burns. "Every child deserves the opportunity to grow up in a caring home with loving parents."
Burns is the only candidate in the race with a 100 percent pro-life record. However, Burns's opponent, Athens Congressman John Barrow, supports abortion rights and has taken $10,000 from the liberal National Abortion and Reproductive Rights Action League (NARAL Pro-Choice America PAC). Barrow even voted to lift a ban on privately funded abortions at U.S. military facilities overseas.
Burns represented the old 12th District from January 7, 2003, through January 3, 2005. Prior to serving in the 108th Congress, Burns was a professor in the College of Business Administration at Georgia Southern University and a Senior Fulbright Scholar. He is a former Screven County Commissioner and served as its Chairman. Currently, Burns splits his time between his family farm in Sylvania and Washington, DC where he works with Thelen Reid & Priest as a Senior Policy Advisor. He focuses on issues important to Georgia including agriculture, health care, energy, transportation and education.
The new 12th District is comprised of twenty-two east Georgia counties including all of Bulloch, Burke, Candler, Effingham, Emanuel, Evans, Glascock, Hancock, Jefferson, Jenkins, Johnson, Montgomery, Screven, Taliaferro, Tattnall, Toombs, Treutlen, Warren, Washington and sections of Baldwin, Chatham and Richmond counties.
