Capito Testifies on Mine Safety
WASHINGTON, DC -(3/16)- During a hearing today on mining safety held by the House Education and Workforce Committee, Rep. Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV) outlined key areas that need to be addressed in order to improve the safety and health of miners in West Virginia.
The hearing, held by the Workforce Protections Subcommittee, marked the second in a series on mining safety planned by the committee.
In her testimony, Rep. Capito focused on the need to improve technology used in developing mining communication and location systems. "I believe that where a serious will exists to develop a new technology, the goal can be achieved," said Capito. "Seven new two-way, wireless communications devices will be tested in West Virginia next week and MSHA (the Mine Safety and Health Administration) has said that it received over 80 proposals in response to its January request for public comment, demonstrating that there are companies and individuals willing to create this safety technology."
