Speaking on the Issues

On February 21, I made my annual address to the Alaska State Legislature. In my speech I stressed three critical
components of a strong economy for the State: reliable, affordable energy; transportation infrastructure; and a healthy,
educated workforce.

Additionally, I addressed over 500 people at a World Trade Center Alaska luncheon on February 23. I shared my
experiences gained from the trip I made in January to Seoul, Tokyo and Beijing.

Finally, I presented my views on climate change to students and faculty at Catholic University Law School on February
13.
The full text of these remarks, and other key speeches, are available on the website, as well as video and audio files
when available.

HEART for Women ACT

In celebration of Valentines Day and in honor of the importance of women's health, I joined Senator Debbie Stabenow
(D-MI), Congresswoman Lois Capps (D-CA) and Congresswoman Barbara Cubin (R-WY) in introducing the Heart
Disease Education, Analysis and Research, and Treatment (HEART) for Women Act on February 14. This bill would
improve the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of heart disease and stroke among women.

In Alaska - taken together - heart disease, stroke and other cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death,
totaling nearly 800 deaths each year. Women in Alaska have higher death rates from stroke than do women nationally.

The HEART for Women Act takes a 3-pronged approach to reducing the cardiovascular disease death rate for women,
through improved health education, gender specific analysis and research, and increased access to screening for
women so that, hopefully, we can reverse the disturbing statistics.

Bill to Help Native Corporations Enroll Future Generations Passes U.S. House

Legislation that I sposored to help Alaska Native Corporations involve their youth in the business of their corporations
passed the House of Representatives on February 28 and is on track to be signed into law by President Bush. The
legislation, S.449, will ease shareholder consideration of making Settlement Common Stock available to Alaska
Natives born after December 18, 1971.

Many Alaska Natives recognize the need to involve young people in their affairs today in order to prepare for the future
of their corporations. This bill will ensure that corporations that want to grant stock to any future generation will be able
to do so - and as such will make it easier to plan for the continuity of corporation activities for years to come.

Meeting with Navy Sailors of the Year

I had the honor of meeting two Sailors of the Year from the USS Alaska. The ballistic missile submarine, stationed in
Bangor, Washington, has advanced nuclear weapons capability, and is an essential part of our nation's strategic
deterrence force.

For each naval command, including the USS Alaska, the Sailor of the Year is the best of the best enlisted personnel
selected by the senior Chief Petty Officers. Uniquely, there are two such awardees in a nuclear submarine, because
there are two complete crews (Blue and Gold), who alternate extended submerged patrols.

Alaskan Students Receive National Honor Roll Recognition

I would like to congratulate the Alaskan students recently named to the National Honor Roll. It is a tribute to your hard
work and commitment to your education. Alaska's future depends on young people such as you. Good luck with your
studies and all of your future endeavors.

A list of honorees can be found here, and for more information on the National Honor Roll you can visit their website.
