ONTARIO -- Today, Congresswoman Norma J. Torres (CA35) released the following statement on the State and Local Tax Deduction (SALT) and the reconciliation process:
"I strongly support many of the provisions that are included in the Ways and Means reconciliation package being considered this week, in particular the extension and expansion of the Child Tax Credit. Although it is not in the current version of this legislation, I am heartened to see Chairman Neal's commitment to including meaningful SALT relief that is so important to middle-class families in California.
"The 2017 Republican tax scam harmed more than 1 million Californians by limiting the SALT deduction. It hurt middle-class families, homeowners, and first-time home buyers in California by raising their federal taxes and making it less affordable to achieve a slice of the American Dream. I still believe that our state should not be punished for choosing to invest in schools, roads, parks, and job creation via higher local and state taxes- which is what the SALT limitation did. It is necessary that a final bill include SALT relief for the many California families negatively affected by Republican tax scam changes."
