Issue Position: Black Lives Matter & Anti Racism

Issue Position

Black Lives Matter
Issue
The deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and so many other countless murders of Black people at the hands of the police, I wanted to recommit to working alongside you in efforts to dismantle systems of racism through action, not just words. So many are hurting now and I hear you.

‪Action means continuing our work to fix a justice system that often fails to provide justice. And redoubling our focus on eliminating the root causes of injustice and poverty and ensure a state and country that values black lives.

Christine's Plan
I supported a successful bill concerning racial inequities in maternal health and voted to make Juneteenth a state holiday in addition to participating in Black Lives Matter Movement marches, vigils and rallies. I continue to show up for all Black and Brown families in my community. I have collaborated with the Black and Latino Caucus in the House to get key wins in our police reform bill this session. I was also endorsed by local progressive leaders of color as the ally they want working with them in the State House.

Police Reform
Christine's Plan
I believe that we need to radically re-imagine our approach to public safety. I have taken the "No Cop Money" Pledge for our campaign.

I voted for the police reform bill passed on July 25th. I was one of only fifteen Representatives who voted in line with the Progressive Massachusetts position on every amendment to the bill. This included:

YES on limiting qualified immunity (amendment failed)

NO on narrowing the definition of "unprofessional police conduct" (amendment failed)

YES on requiring police to certify that there are no known children or elderly people in a residence before securing a no-know warrant (amendment passed)

YES on banning tear gas (amendment failed)

While the Police Reform Bill makes some positive changes, it does not go far enough towards the changes our communities need and I will keep working with my colleagues in the Black and Latino Caucus to stand against police brutality and racial profiling.
