Maine must create a modern version of the Civilian Conservation Corps in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. This would unite recent college graduates along with unemployed professionals in assisting with contact tracing, assist aging Mainers, tutor younger Mainers, deliver food and supplies, and more. A public service corps is a great way to develop empathy, civic pride, and cultivate leadership among a new generation of Mainers. After a vaccine for COVID-19 has been developed, this service corps can then be used to deal with the opiate crisis, assist aging Mainers and veterans, work with the state on responding to the climate crisis, and help take care of our national parks and public lands.
