Issue Position: Transportation and Infrastructure

Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2020

For businesses to thrive in Alaska -- whether cutting edge technologies or traditional industries -- we need stronger transportation and communication infrastructure. The lack of such infrastructure exacerbates the challenges from our remoteness and great distances -- making both the cost-of-living for families and the costs of doing business here that much higher. Climate change is further stressing existing infrastructure.

In the Senate, I will work for increased federal investment in Alaskan roads and infrastructure, rural broadband, air-links, and for the United States Postal Service and Alaskan Ferries which are so important here in Alaska. I will fight in Washington to:

Increase federal funding for our ferries and re-evaluate the federal funding formulas to maximize funding for Alaska and to provide additional funding sources for non-urbanized ferry systems;
Incorporate the issue of ferries into a comprehensive plan for rural communities with opportunities for funding unique to their needs;
Preserve the United States Mail System in Alaska;
Maintain federal funding for Alaskan highways;
Secure funding to address aging infrastructure like bridges; and
Strongly advocate for rural Broadband.
