Statement

WASHINGTON, DC ---- U.S. Rep. Elissa Slotkin (MI-08) released the following statement after voting against an amendment introduced by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (NY-14) to prohibit military recruitment on certain internet gaming platforms.

"This evening, I voted against an amendment, introduced by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, that would ban the military from advertising on some social media and gaming platforms. According to the Congresswoman, this amendment was intended to prevent "damage that could potentially be done' to young people.

"While I recognize the need for all organizations to take care when communicating to young people, I can't support a bill that singles out the military and treats their outreach as suspect. Military service is a noble calling. My husband made a 30-year career of it and my step-daughter and son-in-law are just beginning their military careers. I was fortunate enough to serve alongside the military in Iraq and in DC for my entire career. We should encourage any young Americans with an interest to consider the military as a potential path to professional opportunity and leadership training. We as Americans should want a military as diverse as our society, and to support -- and not question -- those who choose service to our nation."
