Issue Position: Transportation

Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2020

We all know Central Texas, with its continued growth, has not kept up with infrastructure needs. We have several transportation issues that need to be addressed. We need solutions for congestion and bottlenecks, better mass transit, and we also need to ensure our roads are safe. Over the past year, I worked with TxDOT, CapMetro and CTRMA to ensure they are prioritizing mobility in my district.

Here is a list of some of the ongoing road work in my district:

* Four Points bypass from RM 620 to RM 2222 near Steiner Ranch
* Oak Hill Parkway
* Expansion of RM 620 from Hwy 71 through Lakeway to Mansfield Dam
* Design work for RM 620 from Mansfield Dam to Hwy 183
* Loop 360 Intersection work -- removing lights from Hwy 183 to MoPac
* Slaughter Lane improvements

COVID-19 had a huge impact on traffic starting in March. While there were far fewer cars on the roads, accidents still occurred. According to Austin and Lakeway police, accidents were causing more damage due to higher diving speeds. During session, I filed a "Safety Corridor" bill in response to the fatal car accident involving Dr. Michael Babineaux from Sweetwater in Western Travis County. That bill was meant to encourage drivers to follow speed limits. I will continue to advocate for this and other safety measures next session.
