Issue Position: Property Taxes

Illinois families and businesses pay some of the highest property taxes in the nation. We also have the distinction of being a state with one of the largest numbers of government bodies in the nation on a per capita basis. We all see this on our property tax bill where all of the various government entities are listed.

In addition we have a state government that taxes us through the income tax and the sales tax and redistributes those funds in a way that deprives the people of the 89th District their fair share of the taxes paid in. An equitable return of tax dollars from the state takes pressure off of local taxing bodies.

I support legislation that would cap property taxes and give the local taxpayers a say in any tax increases through a referendum. Very simply stated, each government entity would have to go to the voters to approve tax increases. I believe that this leads to a more accountable local government. Property taxes are too high and these high taxes result in a decline in property value.
