Issues: Education

This year the legislature passed an education reform measure that has some benefits but still does not go far enough. I believe that education is best when the local school boards and authorities are in control. There are too many state mandates that add costs to local educational institutions and taxpayers with little benefit to the children in the schools who should always be our focus.

In short, I do not believe that solutions to issues facing education can be resolved in Springfield. In fact, Springfield has done more damage to the educational system rather than being a constructive partner. We have an antiquated school funding formula that seems to reward political clout over results.

In the 89th District we are fortunate to have great schools and teachers who are results oriented and focused on the children and their futures. We need to empower these local educators rather than bog them down with one size fits all bureaucratic mandates handed down from Springfield. I will work hard to make sure that education remains local in the 89th District.
