The responsibility to establish sound immigration policy sits squarely on the shoulders of Congress. For far too long, federal lawmakers have kicked the can down the road and have been unable to enact meaningful reforms. The result is a system that is clearly broken.
America truly is a nation of immigrants. From the founding of our nation, people have been drawn here, from all over the world by their hope to be part of the American dream and by the opportunity of a better life.
America is also a nation of laws. We expect immigrants to come here legally and to abide by the law while they are here. We also expect that when we stand up for the rule of law, our laws should make sense and be consistent with our values.
