Levin, Moolenaar Lead Bipartisan Request for Iraqi Deportation Hearing

Today, Congressmen Andy Levin (MI-09) and John Moolenaar (MI-04) sent a letter to the House Judiciary Committee leadership to request that the Committee schedule a hearing on the issue of Iraqi deportations and take up H.R. 2537, the Deferred Removal for Iraqi Nationals Including Minorities Act.

Previously, Congressmen Levin and Moolenaar have sent a letter to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and ICE, a letter to Vice President Mike Pence, and a letter to Secretary of State Pompeo requesting assistance to prevent the detention and deportation of Iraqi nationals living in the United States. Hundreds of Chaldean Christians are among those facing immediate risk of deportation despite a several-years-long legal battle. The threat to religious minorities in Iraq are well-documented and of particular concern.

Today's letter is signed by Jack Bergman (MI-01); Bill Huizenga (MI-02); Justin Amash (MI-03); Dan T. Kildee (MI-05); Fred Upton (MI-06); Tim Walberg (MI-07); Elissa Slotkin (MI-08); Haley M. Stevens (MI-11); Debbie Dingell (MI-12); Rashida Tlaib (MI-13); Brenda L. Lawrence (MI-14).

A section of the letter reads:

"H.R. 2537 has bipartisan support and, we believe, would be received favorably by President Trump. On January 20, 2020, during a visit to Warren, Michigan, President Trump said, "We're going to make sure that we do everything we can to keep people who have been good to this country out of harm's way. When I get back, we're going to give those who need it an extension to stay in our country.' We were encouraged to hear of the President's concern and stand ready to work with you on this legislative solution."
