Rep. Lou Correa Votes To Pass The Heroes Act

Press Release

Date: May 15, 2020
Location: Washington, DC

Today, Congressman Lou Correa (CA-46) voted to support working American families by passing The Heroes Act--the latest coronavirus relief package. This bill addresses the need for drastic action and takes bold steps to protect Americans from the coronavirus and the economic downturn caused by the pandemic. It also allocates more than a trillion dollars in emergency funding for states and local governments.

In addition to bringing billions of dollars back to California to help communities impacted by the coronavirus pandemic, The Heroes Act restores fairness by ensuring taxpaying immigrants and their families have access to the federal resources their tax dollars fund. Countless immigrant and mixed-status families were shut out from receiving the relief they so desperately needed. Thanks to the inclusion of The Leave No Taxpayer Behind Act, these families will not be barred from seeking assistance.

The Heroes Act also includes several of Rep. Correa's provisions, including mandating USCIS hold virtual naturalization ceremonies for new citizens and protections for legal cannabis businesses blocked from federal aid.

Rep. Correa said, "The coronavirus pandemic has changed everything. With 86,000 Americans dead and more than 36 million Americans suddenly unemployed, now is the time for decisive leadership and bold thinking. The Heroes Act will protect the lives and livelihoods of the American people, and put us on a path to beat coronavirus.

"I am especially proud that my bill--The Leave No Taxpayer Behind Act--was included in this legislation. Countless taxpaying immigrant families were deliberately excluded from the CAREs Act, even though many are classified as essential workers. The Heroes Act ensures these families will have access to the same relief resources as other taxpayers."
