U.S. House Assistant Speaker Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.) issued the following statement on reports that the Trump administration is considering shutting down the White House Coronavirus Task Force as soon as the end of May:
"It is the height of recklessness that the Trump administration is considering shutting down the White House Coronavirus Task Force as COVID-19 deaths and positive cases continue to rise. The administration's delayed response to the COVID-19 pandemic was made worse by a lack of a robust national response to deploy testing, distribute critically-needed medical supplies, and support local, state, and Tribal governments.
"In New Mexico, we have seen COVID-19 cases rise alarmingly in the northwestern part of the state, especially in the Navajo Nation and the City of Gallup. It is irresponsible for the Trump administration to consider shutting down the main task force charged with coordinating our nation's response to the COVID-19 pandemic while this virus continues to ravage communities in New Mexico and the nation."
"The American people deserve leadership. Congressional leaders, governors, and local leaders will continue stepping up to meet the needs of the American people at a time when the White House has abdicated that responsibility."
