Location: Washington, DC

Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement in honor of César Chávez Day, which commemorates the civil and labor rights leader's birthday, March 31, 1927:

"On César Chávez Day, our nation honors the legacy of a man whose towering vision and determined voice helped put the American dream within reach for millions of workers and families. For the Latino community, and all Americans, César Chávez's campaign for worker's rights and civil rights remains a powerful example of our nation's commitment to the values of freedom, equality and justice for all.

"Chávez's extraordinary leadership and commitment to nonviolence galvanized the farmworkers' movement in the fight to secure fairness and opportunity for the men and women who help feed our nation. Today, as millions of Americans face a future of stress and uncertainty as a result of the coronavirus crisis, we pray for and give thanks to the millions of farmworkers who continue their hard work under difficult conditions so that families in America can have access to a safe and reliable food supply. In the spirit of César Chávez, we must ensure that these men and women have the resources and support they need to continue doing their important work.

"César Chávez's commitment to putting workers and families first remains our inspiration and our responsibility. House Democrats will continue to fight tirelessly to protect the progress Chávez helped deliver and ensure every worker and family is treated with the dignity and respect they deserve."
