Griffith Opposes FISA Renewal

Statement

Date: March 11, 2020

Congressman Morgan Griffith (R-VA) issued the following statement after voting against renewal of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA):

"I have long believed the current FISA program infringes on the constitutional rights of American citizens. The report released last December by the Justice Department's Inspector General, detailing FISA abuses against President Trump's campaign, only underscored the program's flaws. If a presidential candidate is at risk, so are all of us.

"The FISA reauthorization bill on the House floor today does not include necessary reforms to protect constitutional rights. It even gives more protection to political candidates than the average citizen. That's not right. It also falls far short on transparency and due process, and I cannot support it."
