U.S. House Assistant Speaker Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.) issued the following statement on the Trump administration's budget proposal to address the coronavirus threat:
"The President's budget request will not fix three years of inept leadership that failed to prepare for this global health threat.
"We need true leadership to keep our nation secure as the impacts of the coronavirus are already being felt throughout our economy and daily lives.
"Unfortunately, key positions within the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other agencies tasked with responding to global health threats remain vacant.
"The administration's budget proposal puts our nation at greater risk. Instead of dedicating funds to combat the current health crisis, President Trump is stripping funding from efforts to combat existing health threats, including Ebola and HIV/AIDS. That is the height of irresponsibility.
"Instead, we need a substantive budget proposal that adequately prepares our federal, state, and local health agencies to keep Americans secure and healthy.
"This administration is unprepared to rise to this challenge."
