Buchanan: "Ditch the Switch, Make Daylight Saving Time Year-Round!"

As Americans prepare to turn their clocks back an hour this weekend, Congressman Vern Buchanan is urging Congress to pass his legislation making daylight saving time permanent.

Buchanan's "Sunshine Protection Act" would end the twice-a-year clock change that takes place every November and March.

Seven states have passed bills to eliminate the time change and move to permanent daylight saving time, but they cannot do so without congressional approval. President Trump has indicated he would sign the bill. "We need to end this antiquated practice," Buchanan said. "There are enormous health and economic benefits to making daylight saving time permanent."

This is the second Congress that Buchanan has introduced the measure, following the Florida legislature's 2018 enactment of year-round daylight saving time.

"Last year, Florida lawmakers voted to make daylight saving time permanent in my home state," Buchanan said. "Congress should pass my bill to move Florida and the rest of the country to year-round daylight saving time."

Many studies have shown that making daylight saving time permanent could benefit the economy and the country. A one-pager of the bill is available here. Sen. Marco Rubio has filed companion legislation in the Senate.

Daylight Saving Time ends on Sunday, November 3, and starts again on March 8.
