Issue Position: Budget, Spending and Taxes

Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2019

When it comes to our state's budget and spending, there is one important thing to remember: that is YOUR money. And it is the responsibility of our elected leaders to remember that fact. I feel very strongly that when a state agency or department requests an increase in funds that our leaders should ask very tough questions of those requesting the increase. We should demand the agencies and departments stand before our representatives and answer the following: Why do you need more money, and just as importantly, how is the money currently budgeted being used? I believe audits need to take place and books need to be opened before money is doled out. Again, this is not the state's money; it is the hard-earned money of our taxpayers. It needs to be handled properly and conservatively.

As for taxes, I think the State should constantly work to keep taxes low and cut them when possible. Our government should stay focused on having a limited role. A smaller government is a less-expensive government.
