Urges Senators to Be Consistent With Their Support for Qualified Nominees
WASHINGTON, DC - (11/2) - Congresswoman Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV) cited his vast experiences as a lawyer, judge, and law student, as well as his record of strictly interpreting the Constitution opposed to legislating from the bench as her reasons to support Judge Samuel Alito to replace the retiring Justice Sandra Day O'Connor on the U.S. Supreme Court.
"West Virginia wants a qualified and competent jurist to sit on the U.S. Supreme Court," noted Capito. "Through his academic training, his service as U.S. Attorney, lawyer at the Department of Justice and work on the federal bench, Judge Alito has demonstrated he knows how to interpret the law not redesign the law.
"When it comes to Constitutional issues Judge Alito has a 15 year track record as a federal judge relying strictly on the plain language of the statute not his own personal interpretation. This is the type of performance we can expect from him on the Supreme Court. I urge the U.S. Senate to move swiftly to confirm Judge Alito."
"Earlier this year we saw the U.S. Senate confirm Judge John Roberts who has the intellect, experience and temperament we expect from a member of our nation's highest court. Judge Alito shares these qualifications of character and capability I would expect Senators to be consistent with their support for individuals like Judge Alito who are qualified and ready to serve on the Supreme Court."
"Just as I did with the nomination of Judge John Roberts, I urge the people of West Virginia to pay very close attention to the U.S. Senate while they consider Judge Alito's nomination to ensure that he receives a prompt up or down vote."
