Representatives Malinowski and Watson Coleman Secure $688 Million for Fusion Energy Research

Statement

Today, Congressman Tom Malinowski and Congresswoman Bonnie Watson Coleman announced they have secured $688 million in funding for the Office of Fusion Energy Sciences, a $124 million increase from last year.

Princeton University manages the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL), which specializes in fusion energy research and is one of only seventeen DOE National Laboratories in the country, and the only National Laboratory in New Jersey. PPPL has 500 employees in New Jersey and receives approximately $113M in funding from FES each year. Around $10 million of that is distributed to small businesses within New Jersey.

"America must be a leader in clean energy. By fully funding this research we are not only creating local jobs, we are supporting long-term investment in America's competitive clean energy economy," said Congressman Tom Malinowski.

"A major part of our Democratic agenda for the people in the 116th Congress is to restore our environment and seek out a future run on clean energy. That includes nuclear power, and I am proud of our work to increase funding for nuclear fusion research. These resources represent a long-term investment in the future of both American energy and our environment. I'm grateful to my colleagues who joined me and Congressman Malinowski in this effort, and look forward to continuing our fight for environmental justice and stewardship," said Congresswoman Bonnie Watson Coleman.
