Today, Congressman Gilbert R. Cisneros, Jr. (CA-39), voted in support of the SECURE Act, a bill package that addresses the current retirement crisis. With thousands of Americans in danger of not having enough in retirement to maintain their standard of living and almost two-thirds of workers having no retirement account assets, the SECURE Act will make it easier for small businesses to offer retirement plans to their employees and allow hard-working home healthcare workers to enroll in retirement benefit opportunities.
"I am proud to join my colleagues from both sides of the aisle in supporting the SECURE Act as we work to protect and secure the American Dream for all our constituents," said Rep. Cisneros. "In California alone, there are about 180,000 residents who will now be able to participate in a 401(k) or IRA plan thanks to the SECURE Act. This is especially important for the home healthcare workers of my district, who help ensure our seniors and those living with disabilities can live comfortably in their own homes."
Rolled into the SECURE Act package is the Gold Star Family Tax Relief Act, authored by Congresswoman Elaine Luria (VA-02) and co-introduced by Rep. Cisneros and other members of the bipartisan For Country Caucus. The legislation will fix a consequence of the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act that is currently causing Gold Star Families to see drastic tax increases.
"For their ultimate sacrifice, our Gold Star Families will be forever remembered as heroes along with their lost loved one," said Rep. Cisneros. "Today's bipartisan effort to correct the tax injustice affecting our Gold Star Families serves as a reminder of Congress' steadfast support and deepest gratitude to our fallen soldiers."
Rep. Cisneros is a Navy veteran and member of the House Armed Services Committee and House Veterans Affairs Committee.
