Rep. Andy Harris' Statement on Gun Background Checks Bill

Statement

Date: Feb. 27, 2019
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Guns

Congressman Andy Harris, M.D. (MD-01) made the following statement about H.R. 8, the Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2019:

"Background checks would not have prevented recent tragedies, but they would make it a crime to loan a firearm to a family member. Under this bill, a parent loaning a firearm to their daughter could cost them a year in prison and a $100,000 fine. We already have universal background checks in Maryland -- and it has done nothing at all to stop the out-of-control number of murders in Baltimore committed by using handguns. Shallow political posturing does nothing to address the actual causes of gun violence or prevent crime."
