We cannot keep cutting pay and benefits for teachers and expect our best and brightest to join this profession. With better pay and benefits and increased emphasis on training and support, Michigan can attract and retain great educators.

We need to increase funding at every level: from early childhood through post-secondary education, including trade and technical training. This would allow us to improve our school environments and reduce class sizes. We need to create a school culture that encourages every child to continue his or her education beyond high school. And once a young person graduates from high school, he or she should have affordable options for continuing his or her education: that includes community college, technical and trades training, and public universities.

We need equitable funding to improve student achievement, especially for under-served children. To level the playing field, investment in free, quality childcare is essential. It would improve educational and social outcomes for children, helping them reach their potential. And it would relieve the household budgets of working families, who dedicate a large portion of their household incomes to paying for childcare.
