In the richest country in the world, too many people live one health emergency away from bankruptcy. Many Marylanders go without preventative care, and the broader health disparities based on race and income remain a serious injustice. Lorig will advocate for a system that addresses health equity and provides quality care for all. A single payer healthcare system will provide equal and comprehensive care, while stabilizing health spending and costs. The benefits of a single payer healthcare insurance system would provide health insurance to all residents, delivering comprehensive quality care including preventative, wellness and chronic disease management, mental health, addiction recovery, basic dental and eye care, in addition to hospice and palliative care. Single payer insurance would support at home care and long-term care for those who qualify by income and disability, as well as ensure choice and portability. The cost of prescription drug prices must be addressed through drug price transparency, direct negotiation, and prosecution for price-gouging.

Lorig will promote policies that address the health needs of all Marylanders through programs that enhance the health of the population and promote health equity. Such programs include early childhood education, safe neighborhoods, quality housing with playgrounds, libraries, access to healthy food, adequate transportation and reduced youth violence.
