If there is one overall message I've received from listening to thousands of you, it's that you want taxes low and fair, government to perform, and that you've had it with hyper-partisanship. To turn things around, we must:
Monitor Government Spending, Make Taxes Fair, and Put the Public First
Avoid errors like the current Administrationâs loss of over a half billion dollars by making Indiana government more accountable and transparent by mandating on-going audits of all state agencies and posting the results online so citizens can see exactly how their taxes are spent;
Use audit results to cut/change programs that donât work and strengthen those that do;
Preserve homestead deductions and standardize property tax assessments to make the process transparent, fair, and predictable.
Provide targeted (a) property tax relief for seniors so they arenât taxed out of their homes and (b) income tax deductions for renters to help them become homeowners;
Understand that politics is broken and focus on solving problems (not partisan fighting) by working across party lines in a clear and civil way that puts the publicâs needs first;
Continue door-to-door visits, hold public meetings in different neighborhoods of our district, and actively engage citizens in solving local problems.
PROGRESS MADE ON FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY & GOVERNMENT PRACTICE:
Justin helped lead the effort to establish an ongoing study of state and local accounting systems to help us avoid errors like the one where the State misplacee $500 million. He also worked to develop the IEDC Transparency portal, an online database of all state tax incentives awarded to companies so you have a better idea of where your tax dollars are going. The state also now must evaluate these tax incentives to ensure companies deliver the jobs they promised to create.
Justin has continued to be open and accessible to you through door-to-door visits, public meetings, town halls, open office hours and attending crime watch and neighborhood meetings. He has remained committed to the goal of working across party lines to find meaningful solutions to the problems in our neighborhoods.
Justin has been a leader in the effort to remove politics from the redrawing of legislative district lines. This long corrupt process of gerrymandering prevents voters from having a real choice in who represents them in their government. He currently serves on a commission charged with proposing a non-partisan solution to this problem.
