Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2018

We must fight for the most vulnerable members of this community, including transgender and queer people of color, immigrants, and the poor.
I will fight for:
"gender identity and expression" to be added as a new category to the list of protected categories in New York State human rights law, to ensure that state law explicitly prohibits discrimination in employment, housing and public accommodations based on gender identity and expression.
legislation and regulations mandating funding for HIV housing assistance for Upstate and Long Island to meet the End the Epidemic 2020 targets.
setting aside a minimum of 5% of beds in state-funded and state-regulated homeless shelters for LGBTQ people including for homeless LGBTQ youth and young adults and secure appropriation of the necessary funds.
ensuring police departments -- including the New York Police Department (NYPD)-- face oversight, review, and disciplinary proceedings by the State Division of Human Rights especially in cases involving police harassment and brutality.
mandating placement in state prisons and municipal jails by gender identity rather than legal sex designation assigned at birth and of secure housing in prison and jails for LGBTQ people and gender variant and gender non-conforming people at risk of violence.
NY Senate Bill S7441A to allow for a third, X option on birth certificates and driver's licenses to ensure that state statute legitimizes and supports the growing non-binary population of New York State.
