SENATOR MURKOWSKI ANNOUNCES COLLEGE INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

Pilot Internship Program Will Select a Student from the University of Alaska Fairbanks

-Sen. Lisa Murkowski yesterday in Anchorage announced the creation of an Alaska college internship program.

Unlike her current summer intern program for recently graduated Alaska high school students, this pilot program is intended for a college student who wishes to work in her Washington, D.C. office during the spring semester. This pilot program has been created in conjunction with the University of Alaska Fairbanks.

"Cultivating young Alaskan leaders is incredibly important," Sen. Murkowski said. "As a former Washington intern myself, I know how valuable a professional experience in the nation's capitol can be. Especially in Alaska, a State that is strongly affected by the work done in Washington and yet is geographically far removed, an up-close, working understanding of government and policy is invaluable. It is Important that future Alaskan leaders from all over the State get the opportunity to become involved in and gain an understanding of the legislative process in D.C. and how that process directly affects the State."

Through the program, the intern will work closely with the Senator's staff in a policy area of their interest. The selected intern will assist Senate staff in such activities as tracking legislation, conducting research on policy issues, attending hearings on Capitol Hill and will be able to enjoy what Washington, D.C. has to offer in addition to other opportunities.

Currently, Sen. Murkowski is working with the University of Alaska Fairbanks to select an intern for the upcoming fall semester. If this pilot program is successful, the Senator hopes to expand the program to all colleges in Alaska in the future.
