Congressman Kevin Cramer commended the passage of legislation today in the House of Representatives to provide a short-term extension of the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP).
The House Amendment to S. 1182, the National Flood Insurance Program Extension Act of 2018, extends through Nov. 30, 2018 the NFIP, which is set to expire July 31. The program was originally set to expire on Sept. 30, 2017, but Congress passed a number of short-term extensions.
On Nov. 14, 2017, the House of Representatives passed the 21st Century Flood Reform Act, which reformed and reauthorized the NFIP for five years. The Senate has not passed a long-term reauthorization NFIP bill.
"In North Dakota, we know first-hand the risks flooding poses on our communities," said Cramer. "The federal flood insurance program has helped many, however reform is needed to keep this program in check for cost efficiency and less frustration for consumers. I hope this extension will help return the reauthorization of the program to regular order without the need to pass more short-term fixes."
The NFIP reduces the impact of flooding on both public and private structures. It provides affordable insurance to property owners, renters, and businesses.
