Ms. KELLY of Illinois. Mr. Speaker, I rise today because gun violence continues to claim the lives of Americans and it remains unchecked by this Congress.
Just this weekend, Chicago--our nation's third largest city--saw 74 people shot, 11 of whom passed away and 63 of whom were injured and will never be the same.
Mr. Speaker, what are we doing? Or more correctly, what AREN'T we doing?
We should be passing legislation to stop interstate gun trafficking, to prevent stalkers from accessing weapons, to keep suspected terrorists from purchasing weapons and to ensure a background check on every gun sale.
Tragically, this Republican-controlled Congress shows no intention to consider any of these commonsense, lifesaving policy changes that we know work and save lives.
Mr. Speaker, we--well, more correctly, this Republican-controlled Congress is failing the American people and putting their lives and families at risk.
