Continuing her fight for immigration reform, Congresswoman Mia Love became the 6th Member of Congress to sign a motion known as a discharge petition to compel a vote on four different immigration proposals on the floor of the House.
The discharge petition would allow Representatives to vote on a resolution to bring four diverse immigration proposals to the House floor. Members could then debate, and ultimately vote on, these bills.
"For months, I have worked hard to advance bipartisan proposals through committees but have exhausted all options," Congresswoman Love said. "By signing this petition, I am joining my colleagues to facilitate long-awaited action. If we do nothing, we abdicate our responsibility to the Executive and Judiciary branches, who continue to shape immigration policy when they have no authority to do so."
The discharge petition would allow for a vote on a little-known "Queen of the Hill" rule that would allow for consideration of four immigration bills, including the bipartisan USA Act of 2018, Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte's Securing America's Future Act, the Dream Act of 2017, plus an immigration bill of Speaker Paul Ryan's choosing. Bill sponsors would have the opportunity to amend language prior to floor action. Of the four bills, the one receiving the highest number of votes exceeding 218 would be adopted by the House.
Rep. Love added: "This is not about any one particular bill. It's about transparency, accountability, and fulfilling our Article One responsibility to create sensible immigration laws. Utahns, and the American people, deserve to know where their Representatives stand on this important issue."
