DeGette Statement on DFAS Denver Decision
DENVER, CO - U.S. Representative Diana DeGette (CO-01) released the following statement on the decision by the Base Closure and Realignment Commission (BRAC) to close the Defense Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS) in the Buckley Air Force Base Annex on the former Lowry Air Force Base:
"I am extremely disappointed by the Base Realignment and Closure Commission's (BRAC) decision to close the Defense Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS) at the Buckley Air Force Base Annex at Lowry.
This will also be a blow to the region. DFAS is vitally important to the Denver area. It employs nearly 1,500 people and contributes $150 million per year to our local economy in wages, purchases and military expenses.
It also comes on the heels of our having dealt with the closures of Lowry Air Force Base and the Fitzsimons Army Medical Center. Denver has had a long and proud history of supporting our nation's military. This decision removes one of the last significant military presences from our community.
BRAC's decision today is directly at odds with the well-considered and carefully analyzed decision of the Department of Defense (DOD) and DFAS itself to consolidate operations to three locations, including Denver. DFAS Denver was consistently ranked at the top of the list of military value, which the law says should be our number one concern.
I will continue to work with the rest of the Colorado delegation to take whatever steps are necessary to mitigate this decision."
