Degette Statement on Skin Cells Converted to Stem Cells Research

WASHINGTON, DC - US Representative Diana DeGette (D-CO) released the following statement on recent important developments in stem cell research:

"The announcement by Harvard scientists that they have discovered a way to fuse adult skin cells with embryonic stem cells is a very exciting development in the field of stem cell research. It highlights once again, the importance and promise of embryonic stem cell research to medical research overall.

This latest discovery illustrates the breakneck speed at which new medical research is occurring and underscores the need for the U.S. government to get ahead of the curve to not only support stem cell research but to provide common sense ethical guidelines which reflect our national values.

There seems to be a new breakthrough every week and it is more important than ever that the U.S. Senate pass H.R. 810, the "Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act", which promotes embryonic stem cell research and provides important ethical controls, as soon as it reconvenes in September."
