First, and foremost, it is our duty as a nation to provide a world-class education to every child. Additionally, as a society, we have become increasingly isolated from our friends and neighbors. Schools provide our communities with a base which connects all members of our communities together. In many areas, schools are the primary source of entertainment, cultural and athletic events; policies that seek to weaken our public education system will do harm far beyond the classroom.
Additionally, there is an increasingly large body evidence which demonstrates the positive societal impact of investments in public education. After school programs and school lunch programs have been shown to improve student performance and retention--we should continue such programs that make it easier for all students to come to and stay in school.
