U.S. Senators Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Mike Lee (R-UT) are urging key House and Senate leaders on the tax-writing committees to eliminate the tax code's current "parent penalty" by including the Rubio-Lee child tax credit proposal in comprehensive tax reform legislation.

"[T]o help parents afford the costs of raising children," Rubio and Lee write to Senate Finance Committee Chairman Orrin Hatch (R-UT) and Ranking Member Rob Wyden (D-OR), and House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Kevin Brady (R-TX) and Ranking Member Richard Neal (D-MA), "we believe the solution should benefit as many parents as possible, and especially that it not privilege wealthier families, or discriminate against moms and dads who choose to stay at home to care for their children full time. … [W]e urge you to carefully consider the merits of our proposal and ensure tax fairness for working families is not left out."
